18. Joshua Tree

Polygamy, Wives & Children

- Church president Brigham Young had fifty-one wives, and fifty-six children by sixteen of those wives.

- Church apostle Heber C. Kimball had forty-three wives, and had sixty-five children by seventeen different women.

- The precise number who participated in plural marriage is not known, but studies indicate a maximum of 20-25% of LDS adults were members of polygamist households. One third of the women of marriageable age and nearly all of the church leadership were involved in the practice.

- Today, the practice of plural marriage continues among tens of thousands of Mormon fundamentalists, mostly in the western United States, Canada, and Mexico, where it is generally illegal. However, practitioners are almost never prosecuted unless there is evidence of abuse, statutory rape, welfare fraud, or tax evasion. Mormon fundamentalists believe that plural marriage where a man has more than one wife is a requirement for obtaining the highest "degree" within the highest of three Mormon heavens.

- Overall in Utah today, those living in polygamist families number about 40,000 people, or about 2 percent of the population. Polygamists are difficult to prosecute because many only seek marriage licenses for their first marriage, while the other marriages are secretly conducted in private ceremonies. Thereafter, secondary wives attempt to be seen in public as single women with children.

- Community members were not to have an exclusive sexual or romantic relationship with each other, but were to keep in constant circulation. ... The average female Community member had three sexual encounters, or "interviews", a week.

- In order to improve oneself, one was only supposed to have sexual relations with those spiritually superior. This was called "ascending fellowship."

- In September 1986 Koresh began to preach that he was entitled to 140 wives, 60 women as his "queens" and 80 as concubines, which he based upon his interpretation of the Biblical Song of Solomon.

- As of July, 2009 there are estimated to be more than 500,000 polyamorous relationships in the United States.

Beyond the Blogosphere,

logra.
